Developing Critical and Creative Thinkers, Collaborators, and Communicators

May 14, 2019  |  8:00 AM – 4:00 PM                                                                      Lighthouse for New Learning  (4/F Areté, ADMU)

How well can your students think critically and creatively, collaborate, and communicate (the 4 Cs)? How intentionally have you designed curriculum, instruction, and assessment to develop the 4 Cs? It has already been widely accepted by educators the world over that students need to develop the 4 Cs if they are to be ready to successfully face a complex, largely unknown future. Yet many schools and many educators continue to aim primarily for mastery of knowledge and skills and only incidentally aim to develop the 4 Cs. In this workshop, participants will learn how they can effectively develop these skills by using powerful strategies like Ron Ritchhart et al.’s Visible Thinking Routines and giving them more opportunities to solve complex, real-world problems.

At the end of the seminar-workshop, the participants will be able to:

  • Discuss what students proficiently need to know, understand, and be able to do to be successful in an uncertain future;
  • Analyze the importance of developing the 4 Cs to prepare students for the future;
  • Define each of the 4 Cs and explain the characteristics, mindsets and processes involved when using the 4 Cs;
  • Identify various strategies that can be used to develop the 4 Cs and build up their 4 Cs toolkit;
  • Recognize the challenges to developing the 4 Cs in today’s students and explore ways that these can be addressed more intentionally in their schools

Learning by Refraction, a 21st century perspective on the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm makes the case for educators to expand the definition of learning from just mastery of knowledge and skills to being able to TAKE ACTION effectively and wisely, using these knowledge and skills, when they are out in the real world. Educators – whether from a Jesuit school or not – will find it useful to explore the importance of shifting to Reflection-Driven and Action-Oriented teaching. In this workshop, participants will do just that, with a focus on how to design valid Authentic Assessments, more commonly known as Performance Tasks. Participants will also learn how to design Formative Assessments that ensure student readiness for a more thoughtful and in-depth work on their Performance Task.

At the end of the seminar-workshop, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of shifting to Learner-Centered, Reflection-Driven and Action-Oriented teaching;
  • Explain the meaning and importance of the Action element of Ignatian pedagogy (for educators from both Jesuit and non-Jesuit schools);

Despite the emergence of new literacies, reading and writing remain to be two core literacies important to the foundation of learning. New technologies may have changed the landscape of education, but strengthening reading and and writing skills has proven to be more crucial than ever in ensuring that learners develop communication and critical thinking skills necessary in the 21st century. With this, classroom teachers are invited and challenged to revitalize their reading and writing classrooms to make them more relevant and engaging to their students.
