In line with the 25th anniversary of the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP), the Ateneo de Manila University Press, the Ateneo SALT Institute, and the Jesuit Basic Education Commission (JBEC) launched the book Learning by Refraction: A Practitioner’s Guide to 21st-Century Ignatian Pedagogy last January 15 at the fourth floor of the Areté’s George S.K. Ty Learning Innovation Wing.
The book is authored by two members of the Ateneo de Manila Institute for the Science and Art of Learning and Teaching (SALT Institute). The institute’s director, Fr. Johnny Go, SJ, and the coordinator for teacher training, Rita Atienza, created a book that they hope educators—both those who are in Jesuit schools and those who are not—can use to guide their teaching.
The launch was attended by educators and administrators from different schools in the Philippines, like the Ateneo de Manila University, Assumption College, and Xavier School. VPLS Dr. Maria Luz Vilches gave the opening remarks and Xavier School President Fr. Aristotle Dy introduced the book’s context and inception, and the support given by the JBEC, of which he is chair.
The book introduces the core concepts of Ignatian pedagogy (like the triumvirate of experience, reflection, and action) and deepens the readers’ understanding of these concepts by contextualizing the ideas to 21st century learners. Aside from introducing and deepening concepts, the book also provides worksheets, activities, and reflection questions for readers to think more about how they can apply the concepts of the book to their own teaching.
