CANVAS HELP DESK

Q: Can I use a different LMS if I’m more comfortable with it?
A: Yes, you may. But we highly encourage you to familiarize yourself with Canvas and to explore using it for your classes. This transition period allows faculty and students to adjust to one LMS in the long run.

Q: Do I need to pay for Canvas?
A: No. Canvas for teachers is free. Make sure to use your Ateneo email. All notifications from your students will show up in the email you use to register.

Q: Is the free canvas account the official Ateneo account?

A: No, the free canvas account we are asking them to create now is NOT the official Ateneo Canvas Account. The Ateneo Canvas Platform will be ready by 1st Semester, as announced in the memo. The reason why we wanted them to already try the free version is so that they can a.) be familiar with the platform b.) already start creating courses.

Q: Can I enroll students to the course I make and use it as soon as the intersession?

A: Yes. Under People, you can click on the + people and invite your students via email. You just need to get their email addresses.

Q: What happens to my course when we move to the official Ateneo Canvas?

A: There is a way to simply save your course and import it to the Ateneo Canvas. We’ll inform you of this procedure when the platform is ready. Everything you’ve set-up will remain as is.

Q: I need more guidance turning my class into an online learning experience. Are there trainings or workshops I can attend?
A: Yes. Go to ateneosalt.org/abc01 for a list of workshops, webinars, and announcement regarding the Professional Certificate Course on Adaptive Design for Learning (ADL).

Q: What will happen to courses that I have designed in another LMS if it is time to move to Ateneo’s Canvas?
A: It will be possible to export and save your courses and import them to the Ateneo Canvas. However, unless you prefer otherwise, it would make more sense to learn about Canvas now so that you won’t have to worry about migration later on.

    1. Yes! Although there is a limit to the file size. For the free account you can upload as much as 500mb

    1. Yes you can. In pages, discussions or assignments, click on external tool (the icon can be found where you can find the icon to insert an image), then paste the embed code that you can get from sites like Padlet.

  1. Would it be possible for us to install Google Apps on Canvas? The installation instruction says this.

    Installation Instructions:
If you are a Canvas school located in the Americas your Canvas Administrator can generate their own key/secret to install the tool here. You can also use the XML url found in this listing.

For Canvas schools serviced in other regions worldwide please contact your Canvash Customer Success Manager (CSM) for a region specific key/secret and configuration XML url.

    1. hi Rae, in our Ateneo Canvas Instance, we will work on integrating Google Apps. However, using the free account this might not be possible. A temporary alternative is to share files from apps as links first.

  2. Went to the Canvas site. Ateneo does not show in the dropdown for “Log in to your School’s Canvas Account.”

    1. Hi! Right now, we can just set-up a free account which we will then migrate into the Ateneo institutional canvas account when it is rolled out. Simply follow these few steps: (1) Go to https://instructure.com/canvas/try-canvas (2) Click “Get a free account” then (3) Fill-out all the information and then follow the rest of the prompts (including confirming your email) and last (4) Click “Go to your account”

    2. hi Yes, The official Ateneo Canvas Instance is still being set-up. As announced in the memo, the full roll out will be by First Semester of the coming school year. In the meantime, we advise for you to try using the free public canvas instance and to create a personal account there. This will allow you to explore, learn and use Canvas in the meantime.

By the first semester, when the Ateneo Canvas Instance is ready, access will be given to faculty and instructions to migrate your whole course to the Ateneo Canvas Instance will be given as well. When you migrate what you’ve made from the free account, all your resources and activities will be set-up the way you have set them up using your free account.

      1. Hi ,

        A few questions:
        1. When we already have Ateneo Canvass Instance, would this automatically link our students to their enrolled courses and teachers to the subjects they are teaching just like moodle?

        2. Can we add guests to the course i.e., an unenrolled individual?

        3. Can we export the same materials we uploaded this semester to the succeeding semester?

        Many thanks!

        1. hi!
          1. Yes, this will be set-up.
          2. In the Ateneo Instance, we will take this into consideration in determining permissions – because this means adding a user to your course. For the free canvas account, you can add anyone you want.
          3. Yes. In fact, even if you started to use the free version, there is a way of exporting and importing to another course (ex. the Ateneo Instance). The materials and structure will remain intact.

          Hope these help!

  3. Hello,

I tried setting up a conference via Canvas. After I create a conference, a new window opens, supposedly for BigBlueButton, but I get an error saying “You must specify a name for the attendee who will joining the meeting.” This is the link I’m directed to: https://app003095161197.bbb-iad-prod.instructure.com/?errors=%5B%7B%22message%22:%22You%20must%20specify%20a%20name%20for%20the%20attendee%20who%20will%20be%20joining%20the%20meeting.%22,%22key%22:%22missingParamFullName%22%7D%5D

This happens even when i’ve published a dummy course and invited some “participants”.

In her account, the participant sees that the conference is “in progress” but when she tries to join, it says the meeting is not active.

    1. Hello!

Unfortunately, I am unfamiliar with this error and I tried looking online but couldn’t find similar issues.

Just for troubleshooting, please try using the BigBlueButton Conference feature on other browsers such as the latest version of Google Chrome or Firefox. It’s possible that some browsers do not support some of the scripts used by the program. Let us know if that helped!

      1. Thanks Kristine. I actually searched first about this error and could not find any answers as well. My Chrome is updated which is what I have been using. When i tried using Safari, nothing happens when i click on +Conference. So i returned to Chrome. But the problem remains.

  4. Two questions (teacher here)

    1. Ateneo Moodle has this great feature allowing a teacher to create an assignment where submissions are automatically sent to and reviewed by Turnitin. Does Canvas have a similar feature? How do I access it?

    2. Does Canvas have a whiteboard feature? How do I access it?

    1. 1. The free instance of Canvas is not yet connected to Turnitin. That said, I heard from SALT that this will be integrated into the Ateneo Instance.

      2. In the Conferences Section, choose the +CONFERENCE which will run BigBlueButton. This platform is similar to Zoom or Google Meet and has the whiteboard feature. Because we are currently accessing the free feature, we’re not sure what are the limits of this Big Blue Button app. SALT is still looking into it but you’re welcome to use other platforms such as Google Meet if you are more familiar with this service.

      1. Thank you for your quick reply.

In all probability then, based on your reply and the Ateneo memo on LMS date May 15, for the coming intersession, Turnitin will not be available for assignments made in Canvas?

        1. Yes. It will be unavailable for the intersession on Canvas. I believe Turnitin will still be available on our Moodle platform during the intersession.

  5. Hello.

    1. Is there a sample course on Canvas we can study? Might give us a better idea of how to use the platform.
    2. What makes Canvas better than the other LMS? Canvas seems less intuitive

    1. Thank you for reaching out, Doc Leland.

      1. SALT is developing one but it’s not for release yet. In the meantime, suggest you visit https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-17391-getting-started-tutorials-table-of-contents. You might also wish to watch the Canvas demos prepared by Doc Isabel and Ms Irish while designing your course.

      2. I can only answer based on my experience with Schoology. Canvas provides the teacher with more options to curate content and engage with the student. It also has default how-to scaffolds every time you modify your content. It also appears to have some auto-correct features. For example, if you make a mistake with say, the scheduling of the release of the quiz scores relative to the quiz date, it would call your attention.

I agree with you. It’s not seamless in terms of user experience. Case in point, we got confused with Assignment Group (pertains to the different assignment categories) and Group Assignment (refers to the groups of students who will do the assignment).

      1. Hi again, Doc Leland.

You can also benchmark the ADL course which SALT will make available next week.

        Thank you.

  6. Hi! I have completely ported my Google Classroom to a Canvas site. I just wish to know how we may be able to integrate the Office365 App into our course site. It will be nice to have that feature so that I can embed power point presentations on my course site.

    Thanks.

    1. Thank you, Erwin for your question.

Based on the Canvas Community, “Canvas supports an integration with Microsoft Office 365 in Assignments, Collaborations, Modules, Course Navigation, and the Rich Content Editor. This integration allows students and instructors to use, create, share, and collaborate on Office 365 files within Canvas. Users can also view their OneDrive files directly in Canvas.”

“The Microsoft Office 365 LTI adds a link to your OneDrive in the Course Navigation Menu. This link is disabled by default. If you would like to use it, please edit your course navigation settings to enable it. After logging in to your Office 365 account, you can view all files in your OneDrive account.”

      Hope this helps.

    1. SALT is still working on one. In the meantime, you might wish to benchmark the design of the ADL training. It was launched yesterday. You can also review the recordings of the ADL synchronous sessions which were posted by SALT.

  7. Hi!

Is there a way that students can post on the discussion and get in touch with the teacher anonymously? In my regular classes, I usually have a GForm where students can get in touch with me and they have an option to post anonymously. Then if it is anonymous, I post their question or comment on our Facebook group and I reply there. I wonder if that’s possible on Canvas.

I also have a mundane question: how do you draw internal borders for tables on Canvas? 🙂

    Thanks!
